Turning chillier on Sunday as a potent winter storm impedes travel well to our south

Saturday has been a rather bleak day across Minnesota with widespread low clouds, some fog, and a bit of mixed precipitation in the northeast.

Chillier for Sunday

Meteorologists call it "cold advection" when colder air is moving into an area. That is what is coming our way for Sunday. Expect afternoon high temmperatures from the teens in the northwest to the upper 20s in the southeast corner. The Twin Cities should have a Sunday high around 26. Winds will be from the north or northwest around 10-20 mph.

A major winter storm that will disrupt travel across the middle of the country is revving up over the Colorado plains Saturday afternoon and will track rapidly toward the Great Lakes on Sunday. A rather broad band of heavy, wet snow is likely from Kansas to Lower Michigan. Strong winds will cause blowing and drifting snow along with teir attendant very poor visibilities.

Blizzard warnings have been posted beginning tonight for portions of eastern Colorado, northern Kansas, southern Nebraska, northern Missouri and southern Iowa. Winter storm warnings for that same heavy snow but lighter winds have been posted farther east from eastern Iowa across northern Illinois into the southeastern corner of Wisconsin. Winter weather advisories surround the warned areas.

Snow is likely to reach Chicago Sunday afternoon

Snowfall amounts can be difficult to predict, but this certainly will be a plowable event with many areas picking up 6 to 12 inches of heavy, windblown snow. National Weather Service offices have been posting their forecasts of expected snowfalls online.
