A cool Sunday, with a late afternoon shower chance; soaking rains tonight through Wednesday

  • Parts of northeastern Minnesota have seen some periods of drizzle and scattered showers this Sunday morning, and those could linger into the afternoon.

  • Scattered showers are expected to move into parts of far southern Minnesota Sunday afternoon, then spread  northward. The Twin Cities metro area will have a shower chance anytime from mid to late Sunday afternoon.

  • Showers are expected to become more numerous Sunday evening, and spread over much of Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

  •  Extended periods of rain are in the forecast for Minnesota and Wisconsin Sunday night and through Monday, Tuesday and most of Wednesday. A few embedded thunderstorms are also possible.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s North American Mesoscale forecast model shows the potential rain pattern Sunday evening through Wednesday morning:

The color chart to the right of the loop refers to the strength of the signal that returns to the radar, not to the amount of rain.

You'll notice that the NAM model shows a mix of rain and snow over parts of northern Minnesota on Wednesday.

Temperature trends

Highs Sunday afternoon should reach the 40s in about the northern half of Minnesota, with around 50 to lower 50s in the southern half of our favorite state.

On Monday, highs will range from 40s in northwestern Minnesota to the upper 60s in the far southeast:

Twin Cities metro area highs are expected to reach the upper 50s on Monday, followed 60 Tuesday and upper 50s on Wednesday.

Highs might only reach the upper 40s on Thursday and Friday.

Our average high temperature in the Twin Cities metro area is in the lower 60s this time of year.
