Happy meteorological spring Minnesota!

The melt is on

Our higher March sun angle and increasingly mild Pacific air masses are turning the tide on (early) spring in the Upper Midwest. This week's mild weather and sunshine pretty much wiped out snow cover over Iowa.

About 4 to 5 inches of snow has melted this week across Minnesota. You know, those daytime puddles that become instant refreeze ponds at night? Here's the snow melt tally from the Twin Cities NWS.

Snow depths Sunday Feb 25th to today:

MSP Airport: 10" to 6"

Chanhassen: 12" to 7"

St. Cloud: 11" to 7"

Eau Claire: 10" to 5"

Mild again

Another surge of mild air moves in starting Friday. Temperatures should hit 50 in much of southern Minnesota Saturday.

Weekend slop storm

It still looks like mostly rain for much of Minnesota Sunday. Rain to snow by Monday should produce several inches up north by Monday. The Canadian model has done a good job handling the last few systems.
