51+ inches: Harvey breaks all-time continental USA tropical rainfall record

I am one many meteorologists who watched computer models crank out the potential for 40-inch plus rainfall totals last week. We gawked at each new model run with a combination of relative disbelief and horror.

The incredible rainfall numbers kept coming last week. Model after model. Run after run.

The models were right.

Today Harvey set a new all-time continental U.S. rainfall record for a tropical weather system. The Houston NWS reports a rain gauge in northeast Houston recorded 51.88 inches of rain since Harvey arrived.

There will be many angles to Hurricane Harvey going forward. For now, we're still in rescue mode on the ground in Houston. There's almost too much coming in for everybody to keep track of. Here's a collection of a few of the more visual and insightful tweets I've seen today.
