I am mourning the passing and celebrating the life these days of one of my mentors Freshwater Society founder Dick Gray. Dick's passion and applied science for all things water has improved water quality in Minnesota, the Midwest and the world perhaps more than any other single person in recent times.

Dick's excellent Passwords articles in the local Lake Minnetonka Sailor Newspapers in the '70s and '80s, and his book "Passwords" inspired me as a young future meteorologist.

Dick's understanding of the natural world around us, in our own backyards fueled my curiosity of all things weather in Minnesota. Over many years, my conversations with Dick have helped me to better understand how weather and climate affect our surroundings in Minnesota. Dick kept highly detailed records of ice out on Lake Minnetonka for decades.

Here's a good summary of Dick's many contributions and passing from the Star Tribune. There will be a celebration of Dick's life at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, at the Gray Freshwater Center, 2500 Shadywood Road, Navarre.

His work is held in the highest regard, and he will be greatly missed all around Minnesota and especially here at The Weather Lab.

Thank you Dick!
