Snow winds down, February Thaw up next

First the snow, then the melt.

At least we're changing up the sequence of events in the winter that keeps on giving.

This morning's snow blitz races off toward Madison, Wis., and Chicago in route to deliver more snow to the snow plagued Northeast.

Next: February thaw

We get a break from snow and cold for a few days this week. Our long awaited and well advertised February thaw kicks into high gear Tuesday. Temps should push 40 degrees in the metro and southern Minnesota.

Overnight lows will dip (just) below freezing, but with daytime temps above freezing and a higher late February sun angle we will melt some snow the next few days. Just don't expect all our snow to disappear this week. There's just too much on the ground.

Here's a look at snow depth in the Upper Midwest before today's latest round of snow.

Birkie looking better?

As many as 10,000 will flock to northern Wisconsin to ski  the Birkie Saturday. The latest trends look good for the race. Temps should start in the single digits, then moderate into the teens in the PM. A fast course?

Cooler weather returns next week

You may want to enjoy the thaw this week. It looks like we return to cooler temps this weekend and next week. Not a full on Nordic outbreak, but still winter for sure.
