Today at the fair: Meet the governor and watch cat videos

Today at the fair, Gov. Mark Dayton will spend an hour at the MPR booth (at the corner of Judson and Nelson), chatting with MPR News political editor Mike Mulcahy live on the air.

He'll be answering questions from fairgoers and taking questions from radio listeners across the state from noon until 1 p.m. (To join in the conversation, listen live online or find your nearest station.)

Also at the fair, cat videos

Last year the Walker was overflowing with thousands of people who turned out for a Cat Video film fest. This year they are putting the cats on a stick and brining the show to the fair in the Grandstand—where for $10 you can view the best cat videos the internet has to offer. This video pranced away with the Golden Kitty last year.

If you go, stay cool.

Chief Meteorologist Paul Huttner says this near-record heat will continue through Labor Day (which, incidentally, marks the end of the fair). In the meantime, Mayo Clinic researchers are trying to figure out ways to help more people get through these types of heat waves safely.

Until they do: Find shade, stay hydrated and sprinkle your state fair adventure with generous doses of air-conditioned fun. (More tips here from our #fairhacks pros.) And while you're dripping through the midway, it can't hurt to envision Sweet Martha's covered in snow. (Mind over matter?)
