Utne Reader leaving Minnesota for Kansas

Utne Reader magazine is moving its offices from Minneapolis to Topeka, Kansas.

According to reports in the Pioneer Press and the Star Tribune, the magazine's owner - Ogden Publications - is consolidating its operations, and wants to trim the bimonthly's editorial budget in half (from $500,000 to $250,000).

Utne Reader

is the only national magazine based in the Twin Cities; it

was founded by Eric Utne in 1984 as a digest to the alternative press. It was purchased by Topeka-based Ogden Publications six years ago.

The Utne Reader will close its Minneapolis offices in March. None of the seven Minneapolis staffers is expected to move with the magazine.
