Utne Reader magazine is moving its offices from Minneapolis to Topeka, Kansas.
According to reports in the Pioneer Press and the Star Tribune, the magazine’s owner – Ogden Publications – is consolidating its operations, and wants to trim the bimonthly’s editorial budget in half (from $500,000 to $250,000).
Utne Reader is the only national magazine based in the Twin Cities; it was founded by Eric Utne in 1984 as a digest to the alternative press. It was purchased by Topeka-based Ogden Publications six years ago.
The Utne Reader will close its Minneapolis offices in March. None of the seven Minneapolis staffers is expected to move with the magazine.
