Why Midwesterners are finally warming to the gap year before college

"Gap-year" consultant Holly Bull tells the Pioneer Press how she counters parents' concerns about allowing their high-school-grad children to take a year off before going to college:

"I ask them: 'Remember when you were 18? Wouldn't you have wanted to have taken the time to explore?' Now is the perfect time to do it because it gets harder and harder to find the time when you're older."

The paper reports that the gap year -- more of thing in Europe, and to a lesser extent on our eastern and western coasts -- is becoming more popular in the Midwest.
