How sticking with Fighting Sioux could harm North Dakota

North Dakota state Rep. Al Carlson, a Fargo Republican who pushed for a new state law requiring the University of North Dakota to retain the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo -- despite a 2009 agreement from the university and state Board of Higher Education to drop them.
If the school continues to use the Fighting Sioux past the deadline of Aug. 15, the NCAA will not allow it to use the name or log in postseason tournaments -- or host any such events.
