Bruininks: Tuition increase likely in the double digits

“I think we’re going to see recommended levels of reductions that are going to be in the double digits.  I’m just hoping we’ll find some solutions to keep them from getting close to the 20 percent level because I think that is going very difficult to pull out in a short period of time.”

University of Minnesota President Robert Bruininks on how the state GOP’s proposed higher ed budget cut of 15-16 percent could affect tuition at the university (as quoted by MPR’s Tim Post at a meeting today).

I hope everyone is aware that whatever the nominal percent increase – double digits – there will ALSO be an automatic increase of ca $750 for undergrads at the U because last year Federal stimulus funds were used to cover some of the increase.

A pertinent question for the President to answer is:

How much additional tuition will U of M undergrads have to pay next year, assuming that the nominal increase is 11%??

The state legislature should be made aware of this number.
