St. Cloud State may end football program

Sorry, football fans.

Hockey’s where it’s at, according to MPR’s Tim Post.

St. Cloud state may be cutting its football team, because it can’t survive on its own. Hockey, however, can pull its own weight.

And in these belt-tightening times, SCSU president Earl Potter sees things practically:

“I cannot lay off tenured faculty and leave sports untouched.”

Potter probably won’t be getting any lecture from University of Minnesota professor and administration critic Eva von Dassow, who has complained that the U is maintaining sports while cutting liberal arts programs.

Meanwhile, athletics budgets at other state universities are being scrutinized as well. Officials at Minnesota State University – Mankato have proposed cuts that would end the men’s and women’s tennis team, the men’s swim team and the women’s bowling team.
