To combat winter, Duluth shows a little leg

Winter is in its last few hours and the people of Duluth are looking to give it a last kick today by wearing shorts.

Shorts Against Winter was started a few years ago as a joke by Kevin Cain, an employee with Swim Creative, an ad agency.

“The simple act of wearing shorts in the middle of winter seemed like a fun way to boost morale and show off our hardiness,” Cain tells Business North. “Since then, the staff took it and ran with it.”

The ad agency provided free coffee and prizes to people who stopped by in summer garb this morning and urged people to post photos under the hashtag #shortsagainstwinter.

It’s going to take more to get Duluth — where winter has a couple more months to go — in a spring spirit, however. In the seventh years of the meteorological rebellion, almost nobody has.

  • I’ve heard it said that this – wearing shorts in winter – is a Minnesota thing. This much I know to be true: Last Friday, I saw a mail carrier making deliveries wearing a winter jacket, knit hat … and shorts.

    • my neighbor always wears shorts when snowblowing, even during early February

I’ve seen that guy; he’s got a beer cozy on the ‘blower handles.

      • However, those are boys (young a foolish).

Minnesota fashion seems to be a hoodie with shorts…for adults (older and foolish).

If I could, I’d wear shorts and a hoodie year-round. Just ask anyone who knows me :).

Growing up in chicago one of the older* ladies in our neighborhood (“Mary” in polite conversation and “crazy Mary” in other conversations) wore short shorts year round, and walked around the block 3-4 times a day, year round.

          Clearly not just a minnesota+young boy thing…

          *maybe 50-60(ish)?

As long as the shorts-wearing set remembers to keep the ice cleats on their shoes for awhile yet, gods bless ‘em.

I’m not relegating my long johns to the back of the closet until overnight temps stay above 30 degrees.

My grandparents always told me to WEAR my long johns during months that had a “r” in it.

My neighbor (in St. Paul) insists that his red union suit, that he has on under his jeans and long sleeve flannel shirt, helps him keep cool in the summer.

True that. I don the longies (although that sounds wrong somehow) at the end of October/start of November and continue the process until mid-March or later.
