When the champs come back to town

There’s nothing quite like tournament time in Minnesota and some of the best moments occur away from the games.

It happens on the highways into town as was the case Saturday in Brainerd.

Brainerd’s adapted floor hockey team was coming home, its state championship secured with a win over Robbinsdale/Hopkins/Mound Westonka in Bloomington.

Our son was one of the adults who helped with a small-town high school’s One-Act Play competition. The play went to State for the first time in many, many years. In theater you do not “win” State, but the best shows/performances are starred. This group received a star. When they returned to town, very late at night, there were lines of cars waiting to greet them, horns honking, and the local police met them at the edge of town and led them to the school. It was thrilling for those kids. In the world of high school sports being used as a feeder system to colleges/pros, who usually cares about Theater kids? Or Adaptive sports kids? These folks are great to make it special for kids who truly deserve it.
