If there’s a kid you could pull for, it’s Garrett Grommesh of Moorhead, Minn., who was born with spina bifida and was just 10 years old in 2010 when the show Extreme Home Makeover showed up in Moorhead to build the family a new home near Concordia College.
He’s in a medically-induced coma at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis after intestinal surgery last week put him into septic shock, according to the Fargo Forum.
His mother says his blood pressure is quite low and his kidneys have stopped working. His lungs are filling with fluid and he’s on a ventilator to help him breathe.
His family has kept track of the number of surgeries he’s required over the years. It’s closing in on 100.
More than 5,000 volunteers showed up in Moorhead in 2010 to build the family a new home because Garrett had difficulty getting around his old one in a wheelchair.
“Quite honestly, I would go back to our junky old house if I could just get his health back,” his mom told the Fargo Forum in 2012.
She’s asking for get-well cards.
