Dakota County sheriff: ‘We’re not involved at pipeline protest’

Dakota County Sheriff Tim Leslie is getting tired of the phone calls about the protest by the Standing Rock Sioux over a planned oil pipeline.

That’s North Dakota, he tells the geographically challenged. His county — the one in Minnesota — is practically in Wisconsin, nowhere near North Dakota or the scene of the protest.

The pipeline protest is taking place in Morton County, N.D.

Lets not let facts get in the way of an emotional rant.

Besides the name of one of the two “Sioux” nations right, those people got everything else wrong.

From the Standing Rock Sioux website:

“The Standing Rock Sioux Reservation is situated in North and South Dakota. The people of Standing Rock, often called Sioux, are members of the Dakota and Lakota nations. “Dakota” and “Lakota” mean “friends” or “allies.” The people of these nations are often called “Sioux”, a term that dates back to the seventeenth century when the people were living in the Great Lakes area. The Ojibwa called the Lakota and Dakota “Nadouwesou” meaning “adders.” This term, shortened and corrupted by French traders, resulted in retention of the last syllable as “Sioux.” There are various Sioux divisions and each has important cultural, linguistic, territorial and political distinctions.”

Apparently the Anoka County Sheriff’s Dept is getting similar calls.

Geographically, Hennepin County is as close to North Dakota as Dakota County is, but that didn’t stop Hennepin County from getting involved.
I don’t think it’s out of line for people to let their voices be heard about supporting the policing efforts at the DAPL protests as is relates to the EMAC.

    • Right, but maybe call the right county (ies). Anoka, Hennepin, Washington.

People probably just feel that the Dakota County SO fits the description of a Twin Cities metro sheriff’s department and want to make sure the get them all covered. It’s just a little harmless profiling.
