After Orlando, the hateful double down

There might have been a time when the murder of nearly 50 people might cause the country to step back and re-evaluate how hatred begins. Maybe pull a little closer together. Maybe give each other a break.

Instead, some people have doubled down on their hatred, as evidenced by this post last evening by Emma Freeman, a Minneapolis artist and photographer.

That type of thing happens in real life? Why wasn’t the guy busted for assault.

  • wjc

Maybe we are reaching the point where our society is doomed. I can’t grasp the mind of a person who would do something like this.

    • jon

Maybe that you can’t “grasp the mind of a person who would do something like this” is a good sign that we aren’t doomed.

Were the comments here all “I can totally understand why you’d spit on some one” then I think I’d worry far more about society.

The hatred and racism and bigotry has always been there, all around us. It is learned early and reinforced daily in some circles.

  • John O.

I fear the worst is yet to come…..

    • Khatti

Two groups of people who each view the other as a threat to their lives and freedom, and are damn determined to do something about it, what could possibly go wrong?

  • Gary F

Just another example of the lack of civility in today’s world.

    • Jeff

Yes, odd how the liberal media outlets don’t look at the level of hate directed towards gun owners right now…much worse things are being said on Facebook towards gun rights supporters and we’re seeing twitter accounts being blocked for being pro-gun.

      • If you have the name of a gun owner who was spit on, please forward it to me. I’ll be happy to talk to him/her.

        • Jeff

You didn’t see the egg thrown at the woman wearing a pro-Trump T-shirt? I’ll see what I can find…

          • You didn’t see I wrote about it the attacks on pro-Trumpers? You haven’t seen the coverage of violence at Trump events? #Victimology

Then, of course, we have this chucklehead .

            https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/acts-of-faith/wp/2016/06/14/pastor-refuses-to-mourn-orlando-victims-the-tragedy-is-that-more-of-them-didnt-die/

          • Jeff

I wonder how the local mosques or even international mosques view those attacks…would be nice to get some footage of that. There are bigots and idiots everywhere and I reject their message, as should we all.

Also, threats against a legislator for giving away AR-15s:

            http://wkrn.com/2016/06/15/tennessee-lawmaker-receives-threats-for-ar-15-giveaway/

          • Kassie

Always on message, huh? Your first attempt to deflect this and make gun owners and Trump supporters the real victim failed, so you change tactics and try to make out Muslims as the bad guy here. Can’t you just say, “wow, those bigots are terrible,” or, better yet, nothing?

          • Jeff

I simply responded in turn…I was curious if those on the left can bring examples with the Islamic faith as being bigoted or prejudiced…no matter who’s spouting hate, spitting on people or physically attacking people over LGBT issues (or virtually any political issue) they’re wrong and need to stop.

          • Rob

Yes, I too am shocked – shocked! – that anyone would take offense at a legislator for giving away assault rifles. That’s definitely going to improve public safety. What’s next, a hand grenade giveaway?

          • Paul

            WOW. Absolutely stunned.

And these morons are looked up to. Wow.

        • wendywulff

People spit on cops all of the time. Companies make masks and hoods specifically for cops and correctional officers to put on spitters if they are transporting them somewhere.

      • jon

I’m sorry, are you really trying to play the persecuted gun advocate card?

I guess I missed the time when gun advocates were gunned down at that NRA meeting…
Or when Gun advocates were spat on.
Or when Congress was passing legislation to restrict the rights of Gun advocates, defining what bathrooms they are allowed to use, and trying to force them into dangerous situations…

I’ll point out that horrible things are being said on social media by horrible people on both sides of the gun debate.

      • Rob

I’m a handgun owner with a MN PTC, and I spend no time at all being bothered by anything said on Facebook about gun fetishists. I do spend time worrying about people who see vitriol against gun owners as being just as bad as attacking or hating on someone for their innate characteristics.

And some people have decided to protect themselves.

They will have a booth at the Pride Festival and are on the festival’s app.

    • TEA

So she should have shot the guy? Oh my…

      • Gary F

Nope. I did not say that.

        • TEA

You’re right, you didn’t say that. Can you tell me how being armed would have prevented/diffused/improved the situation?

          • Gary F

It wouldn’t have done anything to that situation. Getting spit on, while disgusting and an insult, is part of the lack of civility not just the GBLT community faces, it is becoming commonplace. But, many GBLT’ers face even bigger threats, and many are exercising their right to defend themselves.

          • 212944

            Thanks for clarifying.

          • TEA

            Thanks for clarifying.

          • Rob

yes, in a crowded nightclub with a shooter spraying bullets and generating a fog of war situation, let’s add more untrained civilians armed with handguns into the mix.

        • 212944

And the point of writing, “And some people have decided to protect themselves.” is what, exactly. Gary?

  • Gary F

    http://kdvr.com/2016/06/14/gun-sales-surge-after-orlando-shooting/

GBLT folks in Orlando are arming themselves.

    • Veronica

It’s the NRA’s dream come true. Incite hate and get more customers. Whee!!!!!

      • Gary F

How is the NRA inciting hate? Are they behind radical Islam and it’s terror and homophobia?

        • Rob

Seriously? Nobody mongers fear and hate better than Wayne LaPierre and his stooges; have you not been paying attention?

  • Gary F
  • Jasper

I’m confused why this story is paired with the Orlando shootings. There is nothing in the story that suggests why this might have happened to them. All I see is that Emma is a photographer, which doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the story anyhow. So, it just seems to be a blurb about a random guy spitting on two random people while they walked into Target. Why is this a story?
