It was a class act that gripped the gym in Annandale, Minn., on Monday night.
The Annandale Cardinals and the Kimball Cubs were in a fairly close boys basketball contest when Annandale coach Skip Dolan called a timeout. But he didn’t use the time to diagram a play for his charges. Instead, he grabbed the microphone and paid homage to his opponent, Kimball coach Jay Klein and his wife, Jenny, who is undergoing treatment for breast cancer.
“I know there’s a lot of people here who have fought cancer,” he said. “It’s bigger than a game here tonight. We’ve got a young couple with a baby that lives in Annandale. We want them to know how important they are to our community.”
While he spoke, coach Klein raced to the stands to hug his wife.
Dolan said his players wanted to help raise money for the Kleins, so they were the first to throw money in a pot, urging the crowd to do the same.
Here’s the video, posted by Cathy Dolan on her Facebook page.
The game resumed after halftime with one team beating the other team.
