Plane crashes at Oshkosh air festival

Update 8:52 p.m. – A man is in critical condition and two others are in fair condition at a Neenah hospital after the single-engine plane they were in crashed in the morning Wednesday, July 22, while landing at Wittman Regional Airport, a hospital spokeswoman said. (Oshkosh Northwestern)

Update 10:30 a.m.: Five people were aboard the Piper plane when it crashed. An unknown number survived. Planes are moving again following the crash.

It happened today at the end of Runway 27 around 7:30 a.m., about an hour and a half after the Oshkosh, Wis., airport opened for arrivals at the gigantic AirVenture aviation gathering.

I don’t have more specifics of the crash at the moment other than a medical evacuation helicopter landed on the runway to attend the injured.

These things do happen from time to time but nowhere near as often as one might think considering the thousands of varied aircraft that descend on Oshkosh for a week each year.
