Merry mortgage!

Before we get to a week of endless lists and the rehash of news of 2014, let’s pause for one more Christmas moment before we move along.

Joseph Riquelme has one more gift for his mom and dad in this envelope. It’s about $200,000 to pay off their mortgage.

CBS says the kid is a “tech entrepreneur.”

The video was spread by Reddit on a thread that has broken out with Redditors lamenting the relationships they have with their fathers.

The gift of financial security. Wonderful!

A couple years after we were married my FIL gave my wife and I money that was “To put against your mortgage.” At the time I didn’t get it, why drop a decent amount of cash into this 30-year-long thing that would surely still be there for attention later? Surely we had better things to spend the money on….

His insistence did lead to the “13th payment” approach, accelerated principal payments, refinancing to a 15 year when rates fell, and continuing extra payments.

When FIL passed away 5 years ago, the first thing we did with the inheritance windfall was pay off the last $40K of our mortgage. Freeing that monthly capital is liberating, enabling, and definitely a blessing. I plan to instill the same sensibilities in my kids, and help them in the same way.

Can’t they just go upstairs from their basements and make nice?

    I kid! Seriously, I kid! I couldn’t help it.

Lovely story, though. I wish I could do the same for my parents. They’ve given me so much and I acknowledge that regularly.
