The speech most CEOs would never give

There’s little chance Arthur T. Demoulas will be invited to give the commencement speech next year at any respectable business school, where the next generation of CEOs are taught that their primary responsibility is to maximize shareholder value by any means necessary.

That’s why his speech yesterday — at the conclusion of a summer-long protest over his ouster from a grocery chain — was so remarkable.

Yes, I would definitely have liked to work for Arthur T. It will be difficult to dig themselves out of debt, but I believe this community of workers, customers, and management now have the resolve and intestinal fortitude to bring about a rebirth of corporate responsibility. Who knows? It might be contagious.
