Death of the small-town grocery store

I’ve had a few — more than one — requests to post Friday’s unique ‘newscast’ on The Current with Mary Lucia. She brought her ill dog, Smudge, to work.
It was Gary Eichten night at Target Field Friday night as the Twins honored the MPR legend by inviting him to throw out the official first pitch. And, not surprisingly, Eichten delivered like a pro.
The Saint Paul Saints are as close as they’ve ever been to getting their wish a taxpayer-subsidized stadium in downtown Saint Paul. This week, Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman sent a $27 million dollar request to state officials for bonding money for the stadium, and the early line seemed to be it had a good chance of making the cut.
So an announcement today about the Saints latest irreverent marketing gimmick probably had some of the politicians who’ve stuck their neck out for the team cringing.
We’re all pretty excited here at MPR. We’ve organized an outing (we almost never have newsroom and staff outings) to the Minnesota Twins game tonight because legend Gary Eichten is throwing out the first pitch.
