Devils in the details: The carjacking

Colleague Julia Schrenkler had a terrific idea for a News Cut feature today: Seemingly irrelevant factoids that crop into news stories.

Her inspiration was this story today.

The story: A would-be carjacker is dead after police said he was shot and killed by the person whose car he was trying to take on Detroit’s west side.

The details: “Lonya Smoot, who was in the gas station buying a lottery ticket Tuesday night, said today there was also another young woman with the group who looked to be an older teenager. She said she was inside the gas station, playing her favorite four digits 1-0-1-1, while the man who was shot was gassing up his SUV outside.”

Be on the lookout for similar stories, please.

Darn it those were the numbers I play!

  • My favorite four digits are thumb, forefinger, pinky, and middle finger. You may think that’s irrelevant, but irrelevant has a long trunk. Does that count as a digit?

Seriously – to include that detail and almost no information on what kind of guns were used is really silly. I doubt I’ll ever find anything as bizarre as that – but I promise to try.

That’s not even the best part of that article. This line at the end maybe more relevant but I’m not sure.

Smoot, who was in a store nearby when it was being robbed eight months ago, said she was again in the wrong place at the wrong time.
