Hearing today on mailed puppy’s fate

We reported last week that the woman who tried to mail a puppy to Georgia wants her dog back.

Stacey Champion will present her case today at 11 a.m. at Minneapolis City Hall. City officials say the administrative hearing is separate from the criminal case -- Champion has been charged with animal cruelty.

The 4-month-old Schnauzer mix named Guess was rescued by postal inspectors who were suspicious of the package Champion dropped off at a Minneapolis post office.

Champion hasn't told investigators why she tried to mail the puppy, who would have died during the trip. We'll see if Champion provides more of an explanation today.

The puppy has been at the Minneapolis animal control center. If officials decide Champion can't have her dog back, it would go up for adoption.
