DFLer Lesch sets up campaign to run for Minnesota AG

State Rep. John Lesch, DFL- St. Paul, has taken the first steps toward setting up a campaign for Minnesota attorney general in 2018.

Lesch has formed a fundraising committee and registered it with the campaign finance board. The job is already held by Democrat Lori Swanson, and Lesch says he's getting ready just in case Swanson plans to move on.

"My experience as an aggressive prosecutor, as someone who's battle tested and knowledgeable in the law, I'm qualified to do it," he said. "And there's no question if you are, you're going to have to get out there now because you can't necessarily wait for other decisions."

Lori Swanson has been mentioned as a possible candidate for governor next year. Lesch said if Swanson decides to run for attorney general again, he would likely seek re-election to the House.

Lesch is an assistant city attorney in St. Paul and serves in the Minnesota National Guard.
