Daily Digest: Sifting through the primary results

Good morning, and welcome to Thursday.  We're still looking through the results of this week's primary election and the Digest reflects that. We'll try to lay off news about Trump Tower, assuming you've already heard it somewhere else.

1. After four incumbent members of the Legislature lost on Tuesday, some people are asking a big question. Was that because of factors unique to each of those incumbents, or does it tell us something larger about voters looking for change? The answer? It depends.  (MPR News)

2. No matter which candidate wins the election in House District 60B in Minneapolis, it will be historic. The first Somali-American will be elected to a state legislature because both the Republican and Democratic candidates are Somali. Ilhan Omar will face Abdimalik Askar in November. "I think this is an interesting twist and something for us to be really proud of as Minnesotans," Omar said. (MPR News)

3. Phyllis Kahn's defeat marks the end of a 44-year career in the Minnesota House. Kahn was a trailblazer in the Legislature. First elected in 1972, her career includes pushing for the Clean Indoor Air Act, funding for parks and trails, and consolidating state IT services. (MPR News)

4. While some Republicans have peeled off from supporting Donald Trump for president, the NRA is standing by him. In part it's because of his pro-gun rights stand, and in part it's because Hillary Clinton is campaigning hard on enacting some new restrictions on gun purchases. (New York Times)

5. Trump Wednesday called President Obama the "founder of ISIS" and Clinton the co-founder. At a rally in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Trump also said that ISIS "honors" Obama and he referred to him as "Barack Hussein Obama." (CNN)

The Digest will take Friday off, so have a good weekend and we'll see you again Monday morning.
