Daily Digest: Trump and the GOP

Good morning. It's Thursday, which for some people is the best day of the week. Let's take a look at the Digest.

1. Now that Donald Trump has cleared the way to the Republican nomination other Republicans who will be on the ballot this November in Minnesota are reacting to the news. Some say Trump could help. Others are keeping their distance, and some aren't saying yet what they think. (MPR News)

2. Gov. Mark Dayton and his fellow Democrats in the Legislature want to see House Republicans' plan for a public works construction bill.  Months ago Dayton released a $1.4 billion bonding bill. Senate Democrats plan to debate their own $1.5 billion bill today. So far House Republicans have said only that their plan will total $600 million. They say details can wait until there's an agreement on tax cuts and transportation funding. (Star Tribune)

3. We've heard a lot about why Minnesota has some of the lowest high school graduation rates in the country for students of color. There are a lot of reasons for that, but here's a personal story. This young woman has no parental support, no place to live, and a job that she works for many hours a week. Put yourself in Diamond's place and ask how would you do? (MPR News)

4. At least two prominent Republicans won't be campaigning for  Donald Trump. These two are notable because they are the last two Republican presidents. They also happen to be father and son, and relatives of the GOP contender who took the toughest treatment from Trump during the primary contest. (Texas Tribune via Washington Post)

5. Bernie Sanders says he is staying in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination until the last vote is cast. Sanders acknowledges his path to victory is narrow.  In fact it looks nearly impossible. (NPR)
