DFL dinner to feature three presidential hopefuls

Democratic presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton, Martin O’Malley and Bernie Sanders will be in St. Paul on Feb. 12, to speak at a state DFL Party fundraising event.

The three candidates will deliver separate speeches at the annual Humphrey-Mondale Dinner, according to DFL officials.

DFL Chair Ken Martin said the date of the dinner is strategic because it comes two and a half weeks before Minnesota’s precinct caucuses and one day after a Democratic presidential debate in Milwaukee.

“The way I pitched it to the campaigns is, you’re going to be in Milwaukee anyway, so have the candidates come out the next day, spend the day in Minnesota, and obviously talk to 3,000 to 4,000 of the most active Democratic supporters in the state,” Martin said.

Martin is a Clinton supporter, but he said he’s excited to welcome all three candidates to Minnesota.

He said he expects Minnesota to play a critical role in the presidential race next year with precinct caucuses on Super Tuesday, March 1.

“I’m absolutely convinced that one of those candidates will be the next president of the United States,” he said.
