WomenWinning, a group that backs female candidates who support legal abortion, announced that it’s backing Angie Craig for Congress in Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District.

“Angie is a dynamic leader running an impressive and strategic grassroots campaign to win next November, said WomenWinning Executive Director Lauren Beecham. “As an accomplished executive at St. Jude Medical, Angie created opportunities for the middle class and paved the way for women’s leadership. Her unique abilities and experiences have helped her understand the value of education, fair wages, and supporting working families.”

The group’s endorsement is surprising, considering Craig isn’t the only Democratic woman seeking the endorsement. Mary Lawrence, a former doctor at the Department of Veterans Affairs, is also seeking the Democratic nomination.

WomenWinning will help steer donors to Craig’s campaign. Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District is expected to be a highly competitive race this year. Democrats are hoping they can win the seat now that GOP incumbent John Kline isn’t seeking another term.

Two Republicans are currently running for the seat, former state Sen. John Howe and David Gerson of South St. Paul. Several other Republicans, including former state Sen. Ted Daley and former state Rep. Pam Myrha, have also been mentioned as possible candidates.
