Daily Digest: So how was the big debate?

Good morning. There were actually two debates among Republican candidates for president yesterday. Here is some of the coverage about what happened.

1. The main event featured the 10 candidates doing the best in public opinion polls as determined by debate sponsor Fox News.  The leader in most polls, Donald Trump, refused to rule out a run as an independent and defended his past insulting comments about women. The result? The New York Times says he stole the show. (New York Times)

2. Another reporter called the debate "an empty-calorie joy ride." (Politico)

3. And another take brings the focus back to...Donald Trump. (Washington Post)

4. Before the main event seven other GOP candidates debated. Many of those who watched thought Carly Fiorina came off well. (New York Times)

As I saw it, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Ohio Gov. John Kasich did pretty well, while Jeb Bush and Scott Walker faded a bit into the background, overshadowed by the aforementioned Trump.  Tune in to MPR News at 11 this morning as I talk more about the debate with MPR's political commentators, Todd Rapp and Maureen Shaver.

And have a great weekend.
