Online voter registration numbers top 8K

State officials announced today that 8,023 Minnesotans have registered to vote or have updated their registrations through a new online system.

The latest tally from the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State shows that 5,085 were registration updates and 2,938 were successful new voter registrations. Another 598 applications are currently being processed.

“This tool makes it convenient for eligible voters to register and helps reduce costs to local governments,” said Secretary of State Mark Ritchie in a news release.

Ritchie launched the online tool last September, a move that prompted a legal challenge and corrective legislative action.

Four Republican legislators and two election watchdog groups filed a lawsuit late last year claiming Ritchie, a Democrat, had exceeded his authority.

A judge agreed and ordered the system shut down in April. The system was soon revived when state lawmakers passed a bill authorizing it in statute.
