Seifert keeping open mind on GOP endorsement pledge
Only two of the top Republican candidates for governor have said they’ll drop out of the race if they don’t get the party endorsement at next week’s state convention, but a third is considering it.
Former state Rep. Marty Seifert told reporters today that he is “open minded” to abiding by the endorsement.
He said he’ll likely make up his mind at the convention when he meets with the nomination committee. Seifert said he’s confident he can win the party backing, but he’s concerned that some of his supporters won’t make the trip to Rochester.
“We’ve been hearing from delegates in northern Minnesota, where we have a lot of strong support, telling me it will cost them between $500 and $1,000 to vote for me at the state convention,” Seifert said. “So, they’re wondering if the money would be better spent by sending a $700 donation to the Seifert campaign.”
Hennepin County Commissioner Jeff Johnson and state Sen. Dave Thompson have pledged to abide by the GOP endorsement. Businessman Scott Honour and state Rep. Kurt Zellers are running in the August primary.
