McFadden takes the lead on 9th ballot

On the 9th ballot, Sunfish Lake businessman Mike McFadden surged ahead in a close contest for the U.S. Senate endorsement.

He came out with 53.17 percent of the vote, while St. Louis County Commissioner Chris Dahlberg, who had the lead until this round of balloting, secured 44.98 percent of the vote.

McFadden fell 134 votes short of the number he needed to get the endorsement.

Now, delegates move on to the 10th round of voting.

This is a critical phase of the endorsement process. If neither candidate gets 60 percent of the vote to secure the party's backing, delegates can chose not to endorse anyone. That would require a simple majority.
