GOP backs Randy Gilbert for state auditor

Randy Gilbert
The Republican Party nominated Randy Gilbert for State Auditor at the GOP's state convention in Rochester.

Delegates at the Republican Party of Minnesota’s state convention have endorsed Randy Gilbert to run for state auditor.

“I believe I have the experience and knowledge to speak truth to power to all Minnesotans,” Gilbert told the crowd.

Gilbert criticized current State Auditor Rebecca Otto for taking contributions from unions, saying, “I will never allow a campaign contribution to stand between this office and the people of Minnesota.”

He also criticized Otto’s stance on mining in the Iron Range. Otto last fall voted against approving 31 mineral exploration leases in northeast Minnesota. In November, she said Minnesota needs to know more about the potential effects of a proposed massive copper-nickel mining operation in northern Minnesota to make sure taxpayers aren't left cleaning up potential pollution.

Gilbert also questioned why Otto hasn't investigated MNsure, the state’s insurance exchange.

Gilbert served as mayor of Long Lake. He has a degree in auditing and has worked for several auditing firms. He was the only candidate seeking the GOP endorsement for auditor.
