Delegates at the DFL state convention in Duluth have endorsed state Rep. Steve Simon over state Rep. Debra Hilstrom to run for Minnesota Secretary of State.

Simon is an attorney who lives in Hopkins. For the past two years he has chaired the House elections committee. Making his case to delegates, Simon said as secretary of state he would make it easier for people to vote.

" I will continue advocate for early voting, for reaching out to students, seniors, communities of color and new Americans, for better technology so the lines at our polling places will move faster," he said.

Both Simon and Hilstrom had agreed to abide by the endorsement.

The current secretary of state, Democrat Mark Ritchie, is not seeking re-election this year. Republicans  yesterday endorsed former state Rep. Dan Severson for secretary of state.

Severson lost to Ritchie in 2010.
