Candidates for state, federal offices can register today

All five state constitutional offices, including governor, are on the ballot this November. A U.S. Senate seat, all eight congressional seats and every seat in the Minnesota House are also up for grabs. But to run, would-be lawmakers have to formally register. That opportunity begins Tuesday.

Candidates for federal office must file with the Secretary of State's office. Candidates for state office can file at the Secretary of State's office or in their county of residence.

Gov. Mark Dayton and U.S. Sen. Al Franken, both Democrats, say they're running for re-election and currently face no serious internal DFL challenge. But a handful of Republicans are lining up to challenge both of them.

Several of the Republicans running for Senate and governor say they're seeking the party endorsement but others will run in an Aug. 12 primary even if they don't get party backing.

The DFL and Republican party endorsing conventions start on May 29.

The filing period closes on Tuesday, June 3. Candidates have until June 5 to withdrawal their names from consideration.
