Former DFL state Rep. Jeremy Kalin is launching a campaign for secretary of state.

Kalin, who served two terms in the Minnesota House representing the North Branch area, is scheduled to make a formal announcement this afternoon at the State Capitol.

Kalin said he's running because he is passionate about democracy and making it work for everybody in Minnesota. He also said his legislative experience makes him well qualified for the job.

"The military voting bill I chief authored is evidence of my core belief that every Minnesotan has the right to vote and have that vote counted," Kalin said.

Kalin said he will seek the DFL party endorsement and will drop out if he does not get it.

Two others Democrats are already in the race. They are state Rep. Debra Hilstrom and former Hennepin County elections manager Rachel Bohman. DFL Incumbent Secretary of State Mark Ritchie recently announced that he will not seek re-election in 2014. No Republicans have formally announced campaigns.
