Republican Dave Thompson running for governor

State Sen. Dave Thompson, R-Lakeville, has confirmed that he will launch a campaign for governor in the coming days.

Thompson told MPR News that he plans to file the campaign fundraising paperwork on Monday, with a formal announcement planned for Wednesday.

Thompson is an attorney and former radio talk show host, who was first elected to the Minnesota Senate in 2010. He won re-election in 2012 and currently serves as an assistant minority leader.

On Sunday, state Rep. Kurt Zellers, R-Maple Grove, is expected to announce his run for governor. The field is getting crowded on the GOP side, with Hennepin County Commissioner Jeff Johnson and Orono businessman Scott Honour already in the race to challenge incumbent DFL Gov. Mark Dayton next year.
