Where do Minnesota House Speakers come from?

I'm a frustrated cartographer. I can't get enough of maps and mapping. So in the next few months that I'll be writing regularly for this this blog, you'll see a lot more visual, geographical ways to look at Minnesota.

Here's a cool one from the Minnesota Reference Library on the hometown origins of Minnesota's House Speakers.

Minneapolis and St. Paul count the most speakers. But it's not as concentrated as you might think. Including incoming House Speaker Paul Thissen, Minneapolis has produced only 8 of 56 speakers while St. Paul counts only three.

Looking at the map, I'm struck by the concentrations in southern and southeastern Minnesota -- and the wide swath of northwestern Minnesota that's never produced a speaker.

Question: Got a map of Minnesota demographics or politics to share? Drop me a line. I'd love to see it.
