Blizzard warning Sunday afternoon into Monday morning

Some wild weather is on tap for Minnesota this Super Bowl Sunday.

Winds gusting over 45 mph and frequent snow showers will cause periods of whiteout conditions in portions of southwestern and south-central Minnesota this afternoon and tonight. Some areas of far southwestern Minnesota could see wind gusts over 55 mph. Here is the updated warning and advisory map from the National Weather Service:

A blizzard warning is in effect from 2 pm today to noon Monday for far southwestern Minnesota, and from 4 pm today to noon Monday from just southwest of the Twin Cities area to the Iowa border.

A blizzard warning is also in effect from 9 am today to 6 am Monday from Ortonville in west-central Minnesota northward to the Canadian border.  One to three inches of snow and winds gusting over 50 mph will cause whiteout conditions in that area.

Winter storm warnings for snow and blowing snow are in effect from late this morning to 6 am Monday from Wadena northward. Winter storm warnings run from this afternoon into Monday morning for the Alexandria and Willmar areas.

In the Twin Cities metro area, we are in a winter weather advisory from 7 pm tonight until noon Monday. Periods of snow are expected, with an inch or two of accumulation possible. Winds could gust over 30 mph at times, causing reduced visibility in blowing and drifting snow.  Be prepared for very slow travel this evening into Monday morning as some roads may become snow covered and slippery.

Winter weather advisories are also in effect in northern and central Minnesota. The advisories begin in Bemidji at 9 am, Brainerd at noon, and St. Cloud at 4 pm.
