Snow tapers today, nippy New Year’s ahead

Winter storms in Minnesota are like boxes of Cracker Jack. Each one comes with a surprise gift inside.

The season's strongest winter storm so far delivered on forecast snowfall totals from the southern Twin Cities south to Mankato, Rochester and beyond. The special surprise gift with this storm was the instant snow cutoff line that parked over the far north and northwest metro overnight.

Another free surprise? The crazy high and inaccurate forecast output from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's North American Mesoscale Forecast System model leading up to the storm. It was at least 10 inches too high for many areas. Note to NOAA: Please fix the NAM in winter.

While most of southern Minnesota achieved model forecast snowfall totals, the northwest metro and the zone from St. Cloud to Duluth pretty much got skunked. Good news if you're a commuter in St. Cloud. Not so much in the metro.

Storm pulls out slowly today

The main low pressure wave slides east today. Behind it, an upper air vorticity lobe (spin zone) that will keep snow sputtering on and off. Some areas south of the metro will pick up another 1 to 3 inches today even as the main surface low pulls east. Colder northwest flow rides in behind the system.

Finally. Winter.

Couple more inches especially south

Overall, another 1 to 3 inches seems likely where snow bands persist today, especially south of the metro across southern Minnesota and east into Wisconsin.
