Tornadoes possible southwest and south central Minnesota this afternoon

Thunderstorms already erupted in portions of South Dakota, southwest Minnesota and northern Nebraska by late this morning.

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Tornado Watch that includes southwest Minnesota.

* PRIMARY THREATS INCLUDE...

A FEW TORNADOES LIKELY

SCATTERED LARGE HAIL EVENTS TO 1.5 INCHES IN DIAMETER LIKELY

ISOLATED DAMAGING WIND GUSTS TO 70 MPH POSSIBLE

SUMMARY...SCATTERED SUPERCELLS AND SHORT LINES OF SUSTAINED STORMS

WITH A THREAT FOR HAIL...LOCALLY DAMAGING WIND...AND A FEW TORNADOES

EXPECTED OVER WATCH AREA THROUGH EARLY TONIGHT.

The late morning satellite image nicely depicts the developing line of thunderstorms.  Severe thunderstorms are likely to spawn large hail and isolated tornadoes as we move through the afternoon.

The greatest threat for tornadoes as shown from the Storm Prediction Center is in portions of Iowa.

Be prepared to move to shelter if a warning is issued.  Severe Thunderstorms can spin up a tornado quickly.  Seek shelter on the lowest level away from windows.

At this time the severe storms are expected to stay south of the Twin Cities.
