A gray afternoon with cold rain south and light snow northeast

Snow fell overnight and early this morning in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. Overall, snow accumulations were on the order of 1 to 4 inches.

The greatest accumulation, 6. 5 inches, was reported three miles north of Butternut in Ashland County, Wisconsin. Other snowfall totals for the area can be viewed by clicking here.

Occasional light snow is likely in northeast Minnesota through the afternoon, but only minor accumulations are expected.

Minneapolis-St. Paul averages about six sunny days and six partly sunny days in the month of December, according to the National Climate Data Center.

Looking ahead

Late this morning, radar was depicting the area of rain in southern Minnesota and light snow in the north.

Temperatures are likely to hold steady, mostly in the 30s through the afternoon and evening. A better chance for accumulating snow unfolds later tonight and Tuesday.
