June-tober breeze, weekend rain; ‘hot front’ ahead?

My morning forecast tweet said June-tember. I should have said June-tober.

A blustery northwest wind and temps in the 50s make it feel more like October than June today. Temps in the 50s and brisk northwest winds gusting to 30-plus miles per hour will have you reaching for that long sleeve jacket as an October like air mass invades the Upper Midwest today.

Never tell a Minnesotan to stay off the lake, but today you might be better off having that shore lunch at your favorite lakeside supper club. Wind gusts to 30 mph will kick up some big waves and whitecaps.

Here's the view of some big waves -- an uber Walleye chop on the east shore of Mille Lacs from MN lake Cams.

Our weather improves dramatically for Friday as the sun returns, winds ease and temps recover into the mid-70s. The weekend still looks wet, but there are some signs the system may come through faster, and some models are backing off on the notion of widespread multi-inch rains.

Right now the best chance for rain this weekend still looks like Saturday afternoon and evening into Sunday morning.

Stay tuned as we (hopefully) sort out details Friday. Overall rainfall total forecasts dropped dramatically overnight for this weekend.

Hot front: season's first 90s in sight?

How about a hot front just in time for the summer solstice?

The latest runs from the Global Forecast System and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts are cranking out a developing ridge of high pressure and pushing the jet stream way north into Canada by next weekend.

The pattern could produce the season's first 90 degree reading by the weekend of June 21-22 and into the following week. It may also dramatically reduce rainfall totals in the next two weeks.
