Flooding rains drench parts of Minn.; more on the way

Showers and thunderstorms erupted over Minnesota, northeast South Dakota and northern Iowa Saturday afternoon.  The visible satellite image from late afternoon captured the cloudtop canopy of the thunderheads.

Radar of estimated rainfall depicts where the heaviest accumulation occurred from Saturday to Sunday morning around 8:30 a.m.  Note that this is radar estimated, which often overstates the actual recorded rainfall.

RAIN BEGAN AT THE SIOUX FALLS AIRPORT AT 435 AM CDT SATURDAY JUNE 14. AS OF 435 AM SUNDAY JUNE 15...THE RAINFALL THROUGH THIS 24-HOUR PERIOD WAS 4.65 INCHES. THE PREVIOUS RECORD 24-HOUR RAINFALL WAS 4.59 INCHES...WHICH OCCURRED ON AUGUST 1 1975. THE PREVIOUS RECORD 24-HOUR RAINFALL WITHIN THE MONTH OF JUNE WAS 4.26 INCHES...WHICH OCCURRED JUNE 16 1957.

Other 24 hour  rainfall totals in Minnesota ending at 7 a.m.  include:

  • 3.35 inches at Jackson

  • 2.85 inches at Pipestone

  • 2.62 inches at Worthington

The estimated rainfall from the National Weather Service radar in Chanhassen shows the heavy rain that fell in eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

The Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport reported a 24 hour total of 2.19 inches, with 2.21 inches in Eden Prairie, 2.92 inches in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and 1.40 inches in Rochester.

Shortly after 9 a.m., the bulk of the steady, moderate rain was falling in central Minnesota.  A quarter to three quarters of an inch of rain is possible through noon as the rain area moves to north central Minnesota by late morning into early afternoon.
