Forecast: Less rain, mixed sun and milder days ahead

Our weather may finally be about to change for the better.

Gradually.

The cutoff low that has wreaked havoc from flooded Minnesota basements to tornadoes in Tupelo, Mississippi, is finally shifting slowly east the next 48 hours. The result will be a gradually fewer rain showers, more sunny peeks and higher temperatures.

Here's the culprit. The stubborn low pressure system that finally kicks off to the east through Friday.

The system continues to plague most of the eastern half of the nation. The latest danger zone is along the Gulf Coast where torrential rains have produced devastating floods.

Check out the torrential rainfall totals along the Gulf Coast from Mobile, Alabama, to Pensacola, Florida, and the Florida Panhandle. A huge swath of ground now under water, after 5 to 10 inches or more fell the past few days.

Yes our weather is four-letter word worthy in Minnesota. But it could be much worse.

Improving forecast

You may actually look up in the sky by this weekend and smile. Friday's front kicks off a few more showers, but it's actually the atmospheric mechanism that kicks our week long low pressure system off to the east.

That leaves us with some sunny hours and milder temps this weekend. A shot at 60 degrees with sunshine on Sunday afternoon will seem like a gift.

Next week continues to look much milder, with 60s likely. The trade off may be more rain and some thunderstorms.

At this point, I'll take it.
