Nordic Outbreak: Next cold wave digs in as snow blasts Midwest and East

Gutting it out

We endure one more arctic swipe this week. Another week of wind chill advisories and crooked numbers with minus signs flashing on your local bank thermometer.  We can do it Minnesota!

Much like the stock market, our weather is overdue for a correction. It just can't stay this cold for too much longer. At least that's what I'm telling myself and many of my weather customers these days.

First, though, one more shot of polar pain rides south this week, along with a snowy grazing for (far) southeast Minnesota.

Winter 2014: Large and in charge

The advisory map is impressive.  The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is using all it's colors again this week. Wind chill advisories are closing in on Minnesota from the northwest, and winter storm warnings blanket the Midwest and Northeast.

Here's a nice video briefing on the storm from the Central Illinois NWS.

Classic storm

The storm is taking on the classic comma shape as it pushes out of the Midwest and heads for the Northeast into early Wednesday. Note the increasing feed of rain from the south, and snow shield running along the critical 20s and 30s temp zones.

Longer range forecast: warmer days ahead?

The one- to two-week forecast still looks much milder. Here's NOAA's Global Forecast System 16-day output. Highs in the 30s and a relative lack of sub-zero temps? What a concept.

There may be a run on windshield washer fluid starting late next week.

Hang in there!
