Biting cold is back, moderation comes Friday

Arctic air was pushing south this afternoon over a snow-covered landscape.  Winds will gust to over 25 mph this evening, driving wind chill readings into the -25 to -35 range as surface temperatures continue to drop.

At 4 p.m. the temperature at Crookston, Minn., was -13 with a wind chill of -39.

Winds are forecast to diminish in northwest Minnesota by daybreak.  With clear skies (no cloud blanket)  and relatively light winds the landscape will chill to readings as cold as -30.

As we shiver in the arctic air, a snow storm is expected to advance through the Ohio Valley and up the east coast of the United States tonight and Tuesday.

A bout of light snow is likely on Tuesday night over Minnesota.  Accumulations should be on the order of an inch or less.  The cloud cover should hold temperatures up during the darkness hours.

Meanwhile another reinforcing shot of arctic air arrives on Wednesday.  Wind chill readings on Wednesday afternoon could once again be in the -20 to -30 range.

By the end of the work week temperatures are forecast to moderate, close to the seasonal normals.

The month of January is likely to close out with a continuation of cold temperatures over the Great Lakes all the way down to Florida.
