Snowy night, tracking weekend snowy travel south

The skies over Minnesota have opened up with snow once again.

A weak to moderate Clipper passes through overnight with another snowy dusting. A bigger storm lurks for those travelling south and east of Minnesota this weekend. The La Crosse NWS does a nice job of laying out the snowy potential with both systems.

Overall 1" to 2"+ with some isolated 3" totals looks like a good bet for most of central and southern Minnesota when the snow wraps up early Friday.

Bottom Line: Overnight snow ends by Friday AM rush, with a few residual slick spots Friday morning.

Bigger storm winds up from K.C. to Chicago

If your holiday travel plans include Kansas City, eastern Iowa, Madison, Milwaukee or Chicago this weekend heads up.

I've been tracking a snow system for several days now and it's still on track to bring significant snow and travel delays Saturday night and Sunday.

Winter storm watches are flying form Kansas to Milwaukee, and will likely be upgraded to warnings Friday.

Here's a more detailed look at the system's impacts from the Quad Cities NWS.

The system starts with ice in Kansas City Saturday, before a likely swath of 4" to 8" snowfall pushing into northern Missouri and southeast Iowa.

Many Minnesotans have family in and head for the Madison-Milwaukee-Chicago triangle for the holidays. Sunday travel in that area looks difficult at least. The snow bull's eye may run right through the I-90/94  split and include Madison, Janseville, Lake Geneva, Rockford, and the northwest suburbs of Chicago.

Bottom Line: Expect ice transitioning to snow from Kansas all the way to Milwaukee and Chicago Saturday, Saturday night and Sunday. Friday and Monday look like the best travel days to Kansas City and northern Missouri. Saturday and Monday will be much better than Sunday heading for Chicago, Madison and Milwaukee.
