Update 9:15pm

  • Chris B. Critter

As evidence of how volatile this situation is, those storms in west-central MN went from nearly nothing to severe in 45 minutes.

  • Paul Huttner

Yes…storms are firing rapidly in west central MN. Moving NNE.

There were 26 tornadoes reported yesterday in South Dakota. This is a number I hope we won’t approach today in Minnesota. Dr. Greg Forbes from TWC is calling for a “tornado outbreak” in MN today.

    PH

  • Paul Huttner

We will have extra weather updates on All Things Considered today, and will break in or do extended live coverage if tornadoes threaten the greater Twin Cities.

I am monitoring SKYWARN radio frequencies. NWS is asking for metro SKYWARN to be in place by 1600 hours (4pm).

    PH

  • Michael Befus

I see the radar is lit up quite further north and west of where the warning box is. Probably a dumb question, but why is this? It’s difficult for laypersons to track weather that isn’t visible yet on radar, yes?

  • Paul Huttner

    Hi Michael:

Yes, fronts like this usually develop storms from north to south. Already storms beginning to fire now in southern MN. Looks like they’ll fill in soon.

    PH

  • gabbi

what does a orange sky mean?? after that is a thunderstorm what does that mean??

  • Michael

    Gabbi:

I think it is the sun getting low in the sky and sunlight shining ‘up’ on the underside of the clouds. I see it too, and it’s strangely beautiful, yes? Somewhat rare to see, also…
